Our adventures in Singapore!

It’s been so exciting so far in Singapore We’ve contacted lots of social networking sites for our ad campaign. We’re also working with some cool engineers on Elance.com, and we’re programming long and hard to have our product ready to launch in about a week.

This past Saturday was Kenneth Li’s birthday! Happy Birthday! We went over to his place to celebrate. It was so surprising to meet so many fun people from Stanford or have studied at Stanford from NUS (National University of Singapore). It really felt like Stirr (www.stirr.net), a mixer in Silicon Valley for entrepreneurs, VCs, and lawyers, where everyone at the party had their own start-up. Lots of us reminisced about GEM (Global Entrepreneurial Marketing) and it was really exciting to find out that a couple of the entrepreneurs already heard about Homeslyce

Back in our apartment, we’ve had some mosquito encounters… what’s funny is that there’s a hierarchy in who they choose to bite. We’ve found out so far that Jen is the tastiest, followed by Mickey, and last, me. Consequently, Mickey and Jen are stronger than bug repellent for me.

Homeslyce in Singapore!

Hey Y’all!

There’s so many cool things that I need to catch you up on! Mickey, Ellis, Joyce, and Nate received honors and cool gifts from Microsoft for the cool features they created on their senior project on Homeslyce. Congratulations to them! On June 17th, Mickey, Jen, and I graduated! (My brother graduated too from high school!) Whoo-hoo! For wacky walk, Jen was dressed up with palm trees for the theme “Pigs might fly,” Mickey – no brainer, Mickey Mouse – he specially ordered Mickey Mouse cap and ears that said Class of 2007, and I was part of the theme Palm Drive. The group of us made palm trees ’til 4 am the night before that had little price tags with our Stanford tuition (compliments of Sandra Tyan’s idea!). Pictures to come. Graduation was pretty crazy! It was neat how everyone was in denial of saying good-bye.

Some exciting news for Homeslyce: We got funded! FrontEdge Capital is incubating us for the summer in Singapore! We’ve been working diligently for the past few days with some hard deadlines to meet in about two weeks! Wait ’til you see the new site! Kenneth Li has been advising us on how to turn Homeslyce into a million dollar company! Welcome to the team, Kenneth!

We’ve been getting a good tour of Singapore on the way to and from work. And from what we’ve seen so far – it’s so pretty and clean! Jen loves the Sultan’s “Castle” that we can see right outside our window. The food is delicious. Mickey orders at least two dishes for dinner. And everyone is so friendly.

Hey Y’all!

It’s so nice that so many of you read our posts! I guess I’ll have to update this a bit more often. Mickey will be adding a pleasant post soon to his lovely episodes of “I am failing…” But anyways, we have lots of awesome things in store for you this quarter.

Right now, we have $5 Jumba Juice promotions for Homeslyce that we’re flyering in Stanford libraries. Everyone who creates a slice and invites at least 5 friends will be delivered a gift card exactly to where they’re sitting. Email me at kenneth@homeslyce.com if you’re interested.

Next week, we’re getting Homeslyce T-Shirts! We’ll be giving those out next week. I really love what it says on the back. I’ll let y’all hang in suspence!

Moreover, Mickey’s working on Homeslyce for Senior Project, a writing in the major course for CS majors, and he’s gathered some amazing engineers to help work on really cool features. So welcome to the team, Nate Janewit, Ellis Lau, and Joyce Pan!

Other than that, I’m taking a really light quarter (some of the fun ones include Dances of Latin America, French Cooking, and Bootcamp), just got eliminated in the dorm game Assassins (I was top two!) – my assassin invited me to a room of admit students where they had an ice breaker where everyone closed their eyes and POP, I was shot with a water gun – and focusing a lot of time on business and administrative issues for Homeslyce.

Failing a class

When you hear someone say “I am failing a class”, how bad do you think that dude could have done to proclaim to the world that he is failing a class? Most people said that phrase but didn’t really mean they were failing. I guess they mostly end up with a B or B-.

I am talking about failing..Yes! FAILING..GETTING AN F for the class. How bad one has to do in order to get an F? Back in my junior high and high school years, I heard these these stuff from my ‘not-so-smart’ friends all the time..”I am failing Math”,”I got a 0 from my quiz”, “I didn’t study for the final”, etc. I heard it so many times that I took them for granted. Some of my friends flunked out from the school, some need to repeat the class and study in a lower grade. I guess I never understand how those people feel when they flunk classes. Never understand it…until today.

Yes. I am failing one of my classes now. It is the Networking class I am taking this quarter. Actually, the material isn’t that hard but I just don’t have time for it. A lot of time this quarter was spent towards Homeslyce and it was just too fun to stop. When I realized that my programming project was due in 3 days, It was too late. There weren’t enough time to do it. The lateness then cascaded into other projects and like a Domino effect, I ended up screwing an entire thing. This was 45% of my grade..it wasn’t just a baby D problem set I have posted earlier anymore. Luckily, I was fortunate enough to have my wonderful friend, Chun Kai, carried me along the way, otherwise, I would have dropped this class a looooong time ago. Rigth now, I am hoping just to pass this class, getting like a D- or D would make me happy. You know you need a Dog to watch you house some time.

Alright better get to work now. I have a problem set due tomorrow that I have no clue how to do it again…Chun Kai where are you? Chun Kai??

Jk, but I did want to let everyone know that if you have a gift that you want to give, but it’s currently not in the Homeslyce catalog, send us a note, and we’ll try our best to get it in our shop.

Last week was Entrepreneurship Week at Stanford, so we had a great opportunity at the VC Speed Dating event to pitch to multiple venture capitalists–all these good friends from Sand Hill Road plus shrimp cocktail–who could ask for more? We also had a chance to chat it up with various startup groups around campus, some angels, some friends, etc. In addition, this week has made me realize what amazing resources we have at Stanford for entrepreneurship. If you’re a student, you really need to get off your futon and go to the various speaker events on campus, because once you graduate, you’re going to have to pay cash money and fight for tickets to hear smart people depart wisdom and tell jokes. And seriously, rain isn’t an excuse. I realize this is California but get an umbrella and cool rainboots like mine.

Also, if you see Mickey on campus this week, hit him up for a Homeslyce business card (and tell him Happy Birthday too). The printing company messed up and printed him a slanted version, so now he has TWO boxes.

I should study now.

I didn’t turn in my problem set…

So to follow Mickey’s trend of expression… it’s true – I didn’t turn in my problem set for my Labor Economics class. I won’t even bother to describe another class I’m taking… But it’s better for y’all that I set priorities, right? We have lots of new features for you on Homeslyce! And more to come of course.

I got a D on my problem set.

This is totally random but I want to express my grief on the score that I recieved on my latest problem set. I got a D on it! 6/10. Geez..this is the worst grade I have ever got on my problem set. You know why? I want to blame half of it on me and the other half on Kenneth. Yess.. Kenneth again. This kid causes me a lot of troubles..haha. Guess what happened last Tuesday night, the night before my problem set was due. We got out from the Global Entreprenuerial Marketing meeting around 2am in the morning. My intial plan was to start relearning the material (yes..relearning) and did my problem set. Guess what Kenneth said right after the meeting, at 2am in the morning? “Let work on Homeslyce!”, “We are so close Mickey”. I was like hm…I had problem set due tomorrow, and I didn’t even understand the material yet. After thinking for 20 seconds, I was like..”Ok”…I guess that was the part that I blamed myself. Anyway, we worked til 4am and Kenneth went back to his dorm. I woke up again and decided may be I should try and see how much I could have done on this problem set. It turned out to be very easy (at that moment). I could learn the stuff and did it in 2 hours . Confidently to get at least a B on it, turned out to be a D… Anyway, I guess my bitching should end here since it is irrelevant to Homeslyce. By the way, the homework grade is only 10% of the overall grade. This made me feel a little bit better .

Woo-hoo!!! Version 2 is done!

It’s finally finished! After so many hours of hard work and fun, our long awaited version 2 is finished! We took into account lots of your great feedback, added lots of new features and made Homeslyce very user-friendly.

- My favorite feature… I remember a couple of you responded how disappointed you were when not enough money was collected by the deadline for the gift. Well, now you have the option of converting the unmet contributions into an Amazon electronic gift card. Your thoughful messages and contributions will not go unnoticed anymore!

-All forms are now laced with AJAX so that there shouldn’t be any more confusion. For example, say you misspelled the image verification (capcha), we’ll instantly let you know!

-You can now find upcoming birthdays with facebook! (Look for it on our home page!)

The rest of the fun features I’ll let you discover on your own. I’m sure you’ll find them useful! Thanks again for all your feedback! Keep them coming and keep slicing! And of course, fan mail is always appreciated

It is Friday night again…

And guess what am I doing? Coding coding coding…but tell you what..it is almost the end..Yes! We are almost done and the world will see the new Homeslyce. I can’t wait to see it. The feature I am about to add to the site will be superbly cool and now Kenneth is not around to bug me yet. So I guess I can my work done super duper fast. Man..people made fun of my last post but I guess that is cool since baffling this stuff is the way to keep me sane and tell myself that after the site is launched…i will be a baller and I can have all the fun I want Yeahh..so excitingg1!!!
